A guide to Rusted roofing panels: pros and cons Balsam Lake Wisconsin

corrugated_rusted_roofing_panelA rusted tin roof is a metal panel that has developed a protective oxide coating on the surface over time which give the roof a an orange color that is unique, giving each rusted roof its own color and appearance that is different than the next. The term ” tin roof ” is actually a steel panel, tin is no longer used, the patina can slow down the rate of corrosion.

The antique and natural look of metal roof rust blends well in the desert, farmland and mountain areas, rusted tin roofing is not compatible in Tropical and Coastal areas, due to the salt water spray that prevents the oxide layer from forming.

Types of Rustic Metal Roofing

* Corten Steel

* Bare Cold Rolled Steel

Corten Steel has natural oxidizing finish that not only looks attractive, but also alloys the rate of corrosion, it has a longer life span and superior corrosion resistance. Corten Steel is also referred to weathering steel it contains copper and manganese nickel. Once the surface rust has developed Corten gives superior corrosion resistance compared to bare cold rolled steel.  The cost of Corten is significantly higher however the product has a longer life span than bare cold rolled steel. Corten steel can produce stain run off when the patina is developing and could leave stains on concrete, and exterior surfaces such as siding. When the steel gets wet during this time the steel will bleed and leave unappealing rust streaks.

There is no way to prevent the rust streaks except to divert the water into the ground area. Corten Steel does not arrive rusted it usually takes a couple of months for the rusted finish to develop and will continue to patina as it ages. If Corten steel is to be used on interior surfaces it must be pre weathered before installation, this is a time consuming process and may make it impractical for small jobs. NORTH END CONTRACTING can install Corten Steel Roofing products in the BALSAM LAKE WISCONSIN AREA.
